This
program is not a diet program because those programs do not work. Instead it
focuses on good nutrition by utilizing our new online
nutrition program and increasing activity significantly. The information
below gives more details of the tools to obtain an individualized program for
each person.
Metabolic
Rate
This
is a measure of the rate at which you burn calories while at rest. This is
important to determine the amount of calories needed daily to maintain your
weight and more importantly what is needed to lose weight. This test is done by
having the person sit quietly for 20-30 minutes with a small mask on. The mask
does not restrict breathing but instead analyzing the amount of oxygen a person
is using. This is a direct measure of the calories burned therefore a value can
be obtained for what the body needs at rest all day not including exercise.
Body
Composition
Find the ratio of muscle mass to fat in your body and how
it affects your health. The Fitness Forum uses three methods to determine percent
body fat for individuals.
 |
Circumferences-
This is not as valuable for determining percent fat as it is for measuring
changes and addressing where fat is deposited and the health implications
for apple vs pear shapes. This involves using a tape measure and recording
the circumference of different areas of the body. |
 |
Skin fold
Measurements-This procedure involves using a
skin fold caliper and measuring actual skin folds at designated muscle sites (for
example, triceps, abdomen and thigh). These measurements are put into a formula
and your percent body fat and percent lean muscle mass is calculated. Not
everyone is suited for this type of measurement, so check with a fitness
professional before making your appointment. |
 |
Hydrostatic Weighing-
This technique involves sitting on chair in a tank of water. The participant
leans over at the waist so completely submerged and blows out all the air
from their lungs. An underwater weight is obtained and used to calculate
percent fat. |
Nutritional Meal Planner
From
the information obtained about current eating habits using a diet recall, body
composition, and measuring metabolic rate, a meal planner is developed that acts
as an educational aid and guide to begin the process of developing healthier
eating habits.
Additional
Health Screening Tools
 |
Cholesterol
Screenings- Knowing your blood cholesterol level is an important
indicator of the risk of heart disease. Our bodies produce cholesterol, but we
also take it in through certain foods that we eat. High levels of blood
cholesterol can be dangerous, but if you know your numbers you can help control
cholesterol levels with proper nutrition, exercise and smoking cessation.
Cholesterol screenings for members and non-members are offered every other month
at the Fitness Forum. If you are a member of our facility you can make an
appointment to have you cholesterol checked at any time. |
 |
Blood Pressure Screenings-
For your convenience, we have an
electronic blood pressure machine located in the cardio-theatre for your use.
Our fitness staff is also trained and willing to check your blood pressure
manually at
any time. |
